The Bluffs

A bonnie lass
She walked the cliffs
Above the churning sea
To a strapping lad
Aboard a ship
Her heart she’d given free
Throughout the night
His deep voice called
To her ever restless soul
She stopped to listen
So to feel again
Love’s warmth against the cold

The storm raged on
As demons clashed
She tried in peace to wait
But on that night
Two lives were lost
As her strength gave way to fate
She spent her days
Upon those bluffs
Her tears brought greener grass
Yet she would be
Held captive to their past

So when you stand
Upon those cliffs
And look upon the sea
Listen closely
For the voice of love
That longs for what might be

I Wait

Grace enough to breathe
Is what I long for
Grace enough to find
A way to see
Grace enough to overcome
My sorrow
Grace enough to live
And fully be
Grace is what will save me
A gift I don’t deserve
Grace can fill the deepness
Overfill my dry reserve
Lord your promise
Is my talisman
That holds in it my fate
I cling to what you offer
And on your healing touch
I wait

Too Many Tears

Too many tears
Not enough laughter
Too many broken dreams
Left to chase after
Lord, we need answers
For this spot that we’re in
We could use some good news
And some peace deep within
You are faithful we know
Help us know it full well
Give us hope for tomorrow
And a story to tell
Pour out your Spirit
Fill your Church with your grace
Put a song on our lips
And a joy in our face
Let us be the good news
In a world crashing down
Let us love with abandon
Let your glory resound
Help us nurture the dreams
Of the broken and lost
Let us give all we have
And endure any cost
Then to you all will turn
And all knees will bow
For they’ll find their true life
In your love, here and now

Worship’s Grace

So many have a handle
On this crazy thing called life
As for me I stand confused
At the selfishness and strife
And that’s just at the mirror
As I stand and brush my teeth
The person I can see there
Is yet another underneath
And then I turn the page
To find the latest tragic news
And I crater as I read accounts
Of such violence and abuse
So this Sabbath day is needed
It’s a day to rest upon my knees
The BEST day of the coming week
And of the one we just released
So I thank you much Lord Jesus
For the joy of worship’s grace
I’ll sing with all I have within
As I meet you face to face

Being and Knowing

Be not afraid
But know fear
Be not dismayed
But know despair
Be not worried
But know anxiety
Be not alone
But know isolation
Be not ashamed
But know self-loathing
Be not led astray
But know deception
Be not angry
But know acrimony
Be not divisive
But know the divide

Be peace
And know peace
Be hope
And know hope
Be grace
And know grace
Be kindness
And know kindness
Be empathetic
And know empathy
Be patient
And know patience
Be joyful
And know joy
Be generous
And know generosity
Be love
And know you are loved

Gray Matters

i plod along
and shaking
faith holstered
impotence my only encouragement
then others come
the weight dissolves
in the light
sadness erodes
in hope
i run

Standing in the shadows
shielded from the light
waiting for the darkness
inevitable at night
Expected is the dawn
but hours ’til it breaks
the unseeable reality
its weary toll does take
Come quickly sun and Son
unlock this prison dark
Release the weighty cloud
that has settled o’er my heart
By your power I face this foe
and take comfort in the thought
you felt this on the cross
as our freedom there you bought
You trusted in the coming day
when life and light would win
You left behind the darkness
and the carcass of our sin
So be comforted my spirit
hold fast my tumultuous soul
the Lord our God has promised
a brighter future to behold
