Across Town

In the house across town
They sleep uneasy
Love abounds
But food is hard to find
Every day is a struggle
Every dollar is hard won
One step forward
Two steps back and far behind
No complaint makes its way
To the timelines
Never fussing about things
They wish could be
In the homes where life
Is lived abundant
There’s no clue
Of a neighbor barely free

Look Up

It’s easy to see
Only your shoes
If you watch
Your every step
It’s easy to miss
The world around
If never looking
To the right or the left
A smile given
Is never known
If you don’t see
The others nearby
A friendship lost
May be the price
Never knowing
And wondering why
Take a look around
This wonderful world
And see clear
This place where you live
A nod and a smile
A chat and a hug
May be what others
Are waiting to give

What will become
of them
the ones not us
No telling it seems
as they remain them
and not us
But what if they
who are them
have a future
connected to us
Does that not
make us we
And if we are us
what will become
of us
if we fail to consider

Into the Loneliness

Tucked behind their fences
Braving life alone
The enemy convinces
They’re out there on their own
Searching low and high
Hope is but a dream
Trusting in the drumbeat lie
True life to them is yet unseen
So go into the loneliness
Bring good news of peace
Interrupt the busyness
And grace on them release
Not one has been discounted
Not one is cast away
An assault of love is mounted
God wants life for all this day

Distant Neighbors

I see life scattered about
and I wonder why
What leads some to the blight
while others seek the bright
Is order not a sign
of goodness and propriety
Of course it is for that’s me
that’s us and not them
So easy it is to judge the other
from safe distances worlds apart
Truer signs of the need for grace
we may not find
Grace reveals the weeds
in my hidden backyard
that look eerily similar to the ones
in a distant neighbors small front patch
Grace reveals the smiles of families
gathered for a celebration
one in an overcrowded kitchen
Those smiles appear to be much like the ones
in another well-appointed dining room
It is time to see that weeds grow all over
and smiles and laughter fill the air
of homes both large and small
well-maintained or barely upright
The heart of people is the common thread
that can weave a new fabric
The reality of our soul and sin and need for grace
can lend itself to a new unity
a new possibility
a new life held in common
under a loving, holy King
Jesus came to die for all sin
so all sinners could live
and see the truth
that leads to new life

Our Christmas Prayer

We pray, O Lord
to share the light
that came to earth
that Christmas night
May others know
what Christmas brings
as we offer praise
to the newborn King
May we, your people
your grace declare
by the love we offer
and the gifts we share

Chance Meetings

The treasure of chance meetings
A surprising gift from heav’n above
One not to be taken lightly
Adding much to the wealth of our love
Do not fear the interruptions
Of your well laid plan’s intent
For the richness of God’s blessings
Trump any agenda you might set
Embrace the people in your path
Who may be friends you’ve yet to meet
The treasure that you find in them
May be just the gift you need
