A Large Icy Pond

Each day they skate
On a small corner
Of a large icy pond
Figure eights
And spins and falls
Mark the hours
Of quiet joy

Across the way
Too far to see
Others slide around
In their corner
Of a large icy pond

Something however
Goes amiss
The surface gives way
And life moves
Toward death
The gaping hole
Brings sadness and fear
To this once
Hopeful corner
Of a large icy pond

Across the way
News is heard
Of trouble
In another corner
And yet
Even as they sympathize
The figure eights go on
The spins and falls
Still mark the time

Often unnoticed
Is the cracking ice
A fissure moving
From one corner
Across the way
To the other peaceful corners
Of a large icy pond

When one corner weakens
All are at risk
To skate in blissful ignorance
Can be foolishness at best
But seek to understand
What broke the ice
Across the way
Find a solution
And it saves us all
