The Cool Air

the cool air
like a dinner-ready dog
paced around
and poked at me
the days of autumn
were always anxious for
my attention
and truth be told
I had been waiting
to see my long lost friend
warm days were good
for swimming and sno-cones
but autumn held
my heart
the cool winds carried
colorful leaves
and footballs
lots of footballs
the smell of that coolness
is second only
to the sweet aroma
of dinner on the stove
but it’s a close second
as that wafting
soothing scent called
me into happy places
I no longer live
in the cool air
autumn neighborhood
but I remember my friend
even still

The Cool Air
