On a Young Friend’s Birthday

Is what makes a man
A matter of the heart
One willing to break
For a world torn apart?

Is what makes a man
A state of the soul
Where courage takes root
and conviction takes hold?

Is what makes a man
A mind sharp and keen
That looks at the facts
Yet trusts the unseen?

Is what makes a man
A spirit enslaved
To Jesus the Christ
For all of his days?

Is what makes a man
The acts of pure love
Poured out upon neighbors
And God up above?

The answer my friend
Is all that and more
It’s an ongoing lesson
You’ll have to explore

The key to the learning
Of what makes a man
Is found in the bond
In the shake of a hand

It’s found by the fire
On a cool autumn night
It’s found on the water
In the sun’s early light

It’s something you find
Through laughter and tears
It’s God’s precious gift
That will change through the years

So gird up your loins
And guard your young heart
This grand gift of manhood
Is now set to start
